LASH RETENTION - How can I keep my lashes for longer?

Here at Beaches Lash Co, 95% of our regular clients experience great retention on their lash extensions due to the correct application process performed by our fully trained and experienced staff, as well as great aftercare carried out by the client. Though sometimes people can experience not so great lash retention. So here is what you need to know:

Lash retention is how long extensions last on your natural lash before they start to fall out.

However, no two clients are the same and there are many factors which affect retention, all which can span from initial lash extension application, up until your next infill. So there is no set amount of time when it comes to determining how long lash extensions should last. Most commonly, Lash techs and their clients feel that the three week mark is the most cost & time efficient period for an infill, as you should have around 50% - 70% of your extensions still remaining.

The most defining factors which will influence lash life include:

  • Humidity in the salon during application

Lash glue does not like high humidity & temperatures, so we make sure the salon is always just at the right temperature for flawless application.

  • Build up of make up, lack of cleaning or not properly washed lashes prior to application

It is very important that clients arrive to their appointment with clean, make up free lashes. The more time your lash technician spends cleaning your lashes, the less time you will have towards your appointment. This is also important for retention as makeup that may be left behind will cause the glue to be unable to seamlessly connect to the natural lash.

  • Excessive* swimming or sweating

For clients who swim or exercise frequently, retention shouldn’t be an issue. However a client that swims every day compared to a client that does not, will naturally expect to see more shedding of lashes.

  • Use of Mascara & Non lash safe facial products and make up

Any facial products used that contain Oil, you should avoid applying above the eye area. If applied above extensions, the products will melt down onto the lashes throughout the day and eventually break down the bond of the glue. Opt for oil free make up removers for the eye area.

  • Natural lash cycle

We loose up to 5 or more natural lashes per day, however you are more likely to visibly notice lash shedding when you have extensions as they are larger and darker. If you get regular infills, some lashes may be older than others, so don’t worry if you’ve only just had your infill and you notice you’ve lost a couple, they are just old lashes that are ready to come out.

  • Skin & Hair type

Our genetic factors also have a huge impact on our lashes. For example, someone with oily skin and oily or low porosity hair will not hold lashes as well as someone with drier skin and drier, high porosity hair.

  • Picking or playing with extensions

  • Other medications or skin/health conditions

  • Out of date glue & cheap or poor quality lashes

  • Inexperienced lash techs

  • Getting your lashes wet or exposing them to steam within 24 hours of your lash appointment
